Fad diet or onto something?

Well, I have to say over a number of years of both using various formulaic eating plans and seeing other people do the same there are just two obvious and basic truths –

1. The only way to loose weight is to eat less than you burn and different diet regimes suit different people. I for one prefer the type of routine that is about what you can eat or not that suppresses appetite (for example Dukan, Atkins) rather than those that control amounts of food.

2. That the food companies spend million of dollars discrediting anything that works in favour of their ‘branded’ low fat, 0% whatever’s to keep you hooked on their profit targets.

I started the Dukan diet on 1st November 2011 at a start weight of 16st 11lb or 235lbs and have lost 40lbs to date. So, I can say that it clearly works. 4lbs to go, will up date on what works and tactics to succeed in further posts as well as the exercise regime now in progress.

Well if one is going to blog……

Akismet added

Maybe a little presumptuous I know, that the first plugin I put in is an anti spam plug in! However, I think one of the reluctant bloggers issues is dealing with the morass of spam that is the annoying background noise of the web.

Akismet comes well recommended and is easy to add as a plugin. Simply register on the akismet.com site and make sure that you slide the ‘what it is worth to you’ to zero. I didn’t really want to pay anything in the short term. They send a key via email and it is simple to add into the dashboard.

Now spam managed…:) as if anyone would read it anyway 😀

Looking at WordPress themes

I chose WordPress as it seemed to have developed significantly over the last few years and has many active sites from blogs, to web sites and quite a big ecosystem of plugins and themes.

I had read an article in .Net magazine on how to improve the interactive aspects of WordPress and I confess that I was surprised at the capability being outlined, so not only to have a look at WordPress, I felt the need to jump right in….for the first time!

This theme for the site as it stands is called Twenty Ten and looks basic but functional. I still don’t know how to use much of the dashboard but I will get there.

There seems to be lots of Themes available, both free and commercial. The general comments I have read seem to recommend a theme called Thesis. I will continue to explore this one for now and read up on Thesis and then say more later.

So what does a bloggice blog about?

Well intuitively it would seem that this should be obvious, unless it is a job, a sensible approach would be to pick some topics that you like and have some passion for.

To be honest, I was quite surprised at how big a list of topics that I produced that I feel passionate about. So, maybe a starter for 10!

Let’s start with –

– From Bloggice to Blogger, learning the tips and techniques
– Rugby, but sport in general
– Personal Development techniques
– Weight loss and fitness training
– Technology trends and gadgets
– Exploring new music

And no doubt others will emerge 🙂

I do realise that advice to a Bloggice is to pick one subject to help with search engine optimisation and tagging etc. but like I said this blog is a learning tool and not meant to follow best practice but I will try and report best practice.

The reluctant blogger!

So, here we go.

As a complete bloggice, a novice blogger, I have been very close to the worlds on e-commerce, technology and social media for many years, so I guess I should have no excuse to be so slow in trying a blog. It is more of a reticence to spout forth on trivia and nonsense and a view that was well engrained from an early age of keeping your thoughts and opinions to yourself.

Why now, I thought it was about time to learn, to use this as a way of learning WordPress and as a track of some of the mini projects and general interests that I have.

I have no intention of running this blog with any desire to attract traffic or commercial gain and so will not follow every piece of blogging excellence advice but I will try and learn what that is and report it here and use this site to experiment with.

The site is hosted on www.1and1.co.uk and I will give this my best shot on various subjects for the rest of 2012 and take stock then…..and herewith end the bloggice’s first post!
